May 15, 2012 ~ Jealousy

Anger is cruel and fury overwhelming,
but who can stand before jealousy?
Proverbs 27:4

Thoughts~

When I was in my twenties, I had a young woman snub me over and over while at a week long training seminar before we went out in the field to serve the Lord with Athletes in Action. I wasn’t bold enough to ask why she was this way, but, God took a hold of her heart and she came to me on the final day, asking me to forgive her.

She told me, with tears running down her cheeks, that she was jealous of my outgoing personality. I was completely shocked. She was an incredibly beautiful blond woman, and while reserved, she had a beautiful voice when she spoke and sang. We spent an hour talking and understood that our week could have been so much better had jealousy not reared its ugly head. We both learned a valuable lesson.

*Jealousy isn’t mentioned much in sermons, at least none that I have heard. And yet, it is such a horrific emotion, it will rot your heart. It comes from being selfish and self centered, wanting what you do not have.

*Jealousy ruins relationships and keeps you from having a close, loving relationship with the Lord. It creeps into your mind like a tapeworm, eating away at all things good. I’ve watched jealousy consume someone I care about and destroy friendships along the way.

*Jealousy is mentioned in Galatians 5:20 along with idolatry, witchcraft, hatred and several other traits we do not want to have. The enemy of God loves to push jealousy at us. Beware of this horrid reaction to others possessions, gifts and lives.

*Jealousy has absolutely no place in the life of a believer: it must be spotlighted and then destroyed in order for us to walk peacefully with Jesus and serve Him with a clean heart

Action~

How can we refrain from jealousy? Only through the power of the Holy Spirit. Read Galatians 5:13-26. Especially note verse 20.

Who are you jealous of? Remember, when we are jealous, we are being self centered.

Using a “love in action” plan, call the person, send them an email, text or note on Facebook, encouraging them in the area you wish you had. Open the door for a closer relationship. Get rid of jealousy and you get rid of that tapeworm!

Pray~
Lord, may jealousy never find its way into my heart again. Remind me that I am right where I am supposed to be, living my life and not someone else’s. I trust in You, Lord.

Trusting in Him,
Becky

Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.

Proverbs 13:12

Thoughts~

I suddenly realized through a friend’s statement (that was not even meant for me) that I was holding on really tight to something that I needed to let go. Clutching it closely, it was a memory that was keeping me from being able to move forward. It was, in a weird way, a comfort to me, even though the memory was definitely not bringing me closure to a situation.

My friends random words made me think about how when my grandson has his pacifier in his mouth, the minute he sees his bottle coming, he spits it out so he can receive something better. I wasn’t releasing my “pacifier” and so how could I expect God to bring me something better?

As long as I am holding on to something, I can’t reach out and accept what God wants to give to me next. Hope is like that.  God offers us the opportunity to release old issues, baggage or memories so that we have something wonderful to look forward to.

He understands our hearts better than we do and He wants to fulfill those longings we have, as long as they are in accordance to His word. But we must let go of what we are holding on to, so that hope can soar into our souls and we can wait expectantly with open hands.

Action~

What might be in your hands? As you read the paragraphs above, did something immediately come to your mind that you are grasping onto with all your might? Something that isn’t quite harming you, but, it certainly isn't helping you. Or is it making you sick and keeping you in a parking zone, so that you can’t move ahead.

It’s time to release it if you want new blessings from God. He has some special plans for each of us so give whatever it is to Him. He doesn't recycle old dreams or hopes: He buries them and brings new blessings of joy in the most perfect time for your life. For the Christian whose hope is in the Lord, who is walking according to His will, get ready to receive.

What is your deepest longing? Tell the Lord.  He already knows, but, tell Him anyway. Hearing yourself speak it out loud, helps you to know and remember you have talked to the Lord about it.

Pray~

Lord, I'm going to let this old thing go. I don’t want it anymore: I want to hope for the future and accept your blessings. I am ready to receive. Fulfill my longing, Lord.

Trusting in Him,
Becky
