December 15, 2012 ~ Day 15: Giving our hearts (through prayer)

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:18

Thoughts ~ After the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut at Sandy Hook Elementary School, I am struggling with writing my Christmas themed blog tonight. As a mother, I have tried hard to not allow myself to think beyond what happened today.  But we can’t help that natural response. I want to hold my children closer and tell them how much I love them. I am devastated for the families who have lost a loved one and my heart is breaking for the parents of the children they lost.

Instead of sharing an idea for the 25 days of giving our hearts through God’s love, may I ask that instead, we simply give our hearts in prayer this 15th day.

Action ~ Pray for the families, the teachers and staff of Sandy Hook Elementary School, the people of Newtown. That is a precious way to give of ourselves: to spend time in prayer. To my knowledge 20 children were killed along with 6 adults.

This painting by David Bowman called "Security" encouraged me today and I pray it brings encouragement to you too. There is nothing sweeter than knowing Jesus greeted each of the children in His most tender embrace today.

Besides praying, if you know of anyone who has lost someone by murder, it might be a time to reach out because they are probably dealing with new emotions right now. They may just need to talk, but be there if you can, on the phone or in person.

Prayer ~ Lord, I ask that you draw the people of Newtown to You in ways that will bring them comfort, where they feel your loving embrace and are able to rest in Your love. May the believers among the families feel your strength and may the unbelievers seek you out. I know they need You more than anything right now. This does not make sense, and in our humanness, we wonder why this was allowed.   But we love You and trust You. I for one am ready to see You put a stop to this madness and take us to eternity where there will be love and joy. I love you Lord and I pray for Your wisdom to help me comfort others who are hurting and questioning.

Always trusting in the Lord,
Becky
