December 17, 2012 ~ Day 17: Giving our hearts through giving ourselves

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Philippians 2:4

Day 17

Thoughts ~ I was going to write “can I be honest with you?” and realized it’s my blog and I’m always honest with you.  So of course I will be. I’m still having a hard time still getting back into the giving mode of our 25 days of giving our hearts through God’s love. As I thought about what I would like to be given if tragedy struck my family, it would simply be a shoulder to cry on, a hand to hold, someone to talk through the senseless devastation in Newtown, Connecticut. I stopped watching TV last night to distance myself a bit from the devastation because I have a tendency to be too empathetic and the tears kept flowing for the parents and siblings, all of the family and friends, who lost someone at Sandy Hook.

And then it hit me. God wants us to give ourselves fully to anyone that needs us. Everyone has hurts buried deep inside their hearts. Or perhaps they are open about their hurts. Either way, today we simply need to give ourselves. Our hearts.  Give them freely with wild abandonment. Be completely selfless. Be there for hurting people. Listen; really listen, as they share their emotions.

Action ~ Give yourself to someone. Simple, isn't it? Your ears, hands, arms, eyes, voice, time. If you are hurting yourself, give anyway because you’ll find your sorrows will be lessened as you dive into helping someone else. My friend Susan, who is blind, did this recently at a nursing home and she made such a difference in one woman’s life; in one woman’s heart.

Prayer ~ Father show us who we can give to.  Open our eyes to see the hurting people who need us.  And if we are the ones that are hurting, Lord, teach us about giving our hearts to get out of our own sorrow. Amen

Trusting in the Lord,
Becky
